Mark Saxon files for re-election for 

Oconee County Board of Commissioners, Post 4 


Watkinsville, Georgia – Mark Saxon, Post 4 Commissioner for the Oconee County Board of Commisioners (BOC), and a retired Sergeant Major from the United States Army, filed for re-election today. Saxon, a lifelong Republican and 47 year resident of Oconee County has served as an Oconee County Commissioner since January 2013. 


“I love serving our great county and am humbled by the many citizens that have encouraged me to continue serving.” 


In addition to becoming a Certified County Commissioner in his first year in office, Mark serves on many boards and councils representing the citizens of the county.  Marks training, combined with his 24 years of service as an US Army soldier and leader, have positioned him well to stand up for his values and those of the people of Oconee County. In addition to graduating from numerous Army Non-Commissioned Officer leadership courses, Mark is a 2004 graduate of the prestigious Army Sergeants Major Academy. Additionally, Mark was twice awarded the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Army Reserve Component Achievement Award which annually recognizes the most outstanding Non-Commissioned Officer in the Georgia Army National Guard. 


Mark enlisted in the Georgia Army National Guard in 1983 as a Military Policeman. In 1986, he entered active duty service with the National Guard with the 178th Military Police Company based in Monroe, GA. Over the next 21 years, Mark served throughout the state in increasing positions of responsibility culminating as the Georgia State Mobilization Sergeant Major with duties impacting all 12,000 members of the Georgia Army National Guard.


Mark has been married for 28 years to his childhood sweetheart, the former Marie Cooper. Marie retire as a science teacher at North Oconee County High School after 30 years in the classroom. Mark and Marie have two boys, Mack and Mason. They have lived on Clotfelter road for over 28 years.
